Originally, I was just drawing out gothic windows and thought sunbeams would make a lovely touch. As the piece developed, I wanted to combine something very grand and formal, like those windows, with something completely ordinary like a sleeping cat. I use that combination quite often in my work; it elevates the ordinary thing into something special, but it also makes the big, beautiful thing into something more approachable. There are bits of the magnificent and the mundane in every single day, in every single life, and I think the fusion of the two is what allows us to see both more clearly.
This is a painting of a cozy, sunny autumn afternoon, but it’s also about the feeling of ease and relief that comes with finding a safe and quiet place to rest. For me it’s about the peaceful calm that comes finally from giving my worry to God and letting it come off my own shoulders.
